What is a flameless LED candle?

A flameless LED candle is a battery-operated candle that uses a light-emitting diode (LED) to create the illusion of a real flame. These candles are safe to use around children and pets, and they’re also great for use in places where real flames are not allowed, such as hospitals and nursing homes.

How does a flameless candle work?

Flameless candles are made with a LED light and a small battery. The LED light is placed inside the candle, and when the battery is turned on, the light shines through the wax to create the illusion of a real flame.

What are the benefits of flameless candles?

Flameless candles offer many benefits over traditional ones, such as being safe to use around children and pets. They’re also great for use in places where real flames are not allowed, such as hospitals and nursing homes. In addition, flameless candles are often more affordable than traditional candles, and there is no need to worry about leaving them unsupervised: no flame, no fire, peace of mind.

Do flameless candles look real?

Flameless candles can look just as real as traditional candles, depending on the type of flameless candle you choose. There are many different styles of flameless candles on the market, from realistic-looking pillar candles to tea lights and votives.

How long do flameless candles last?

Flameless candles can last for 100 hours on average. This will heavily depend on the type of flameless candle you choose. Some flameless candles come with a timer function that allows you to set the candle to turn off after a certain number of hours. The batteries you use will be a critical factor in how long your flameless candle lasts. Unless, of course, you purchase a candle with a wall plug.

What are flameless candles made of?

Flameless candles are made with a LED light and a small battery and either a wax candle (giving it a more realistic look) or plastic. The LED light is placed inside the candle, and when the battery is turned on, the light shines through the wax to create the illusion of a real flame.

What do you need to make a flameless candle?

To make a flameless candle, you will need:

  • A votive or pillar candle (you can use other candle types – this will depend on your preference).
  • LED bulb with battery pack (you can choose the LED colour, making the candle your own).
  • Foam Board
  • Decorative paper (we would suggest a wood-style paper to provide an authentic look, but you can use your imagination).
  • A cutting mat.
  • Tape.
  • A ruler.
  • Glue Stick.
  • A Stanley knife.
  • 18 gauge wire (or you can use an old metal coat hanger).
  • Heatproof gloves for protection.
  • An AA battery (or batteries, depending on the size of your candle).

How to make a flameless candle?

Now that you know what you need let’s start making your flameless candle!

Step 1: Prepare your LED light bulb by adding your batteries to the battery pack. Check that the bulb works correctly and provides the desired light source.

Step 2: Create the candle base. Take your chosen candle and centre it on the foam board. Draw a circle onto a foam board with a pencil around the bottom of the candle.

Step 3: Outline your base with a pencil and a ruler.

Step 4: Place your foam board on your cutting mat. Cut out the base by using the Stanley knife.

Step 5: Take your chosen decorative paper and place the cosmetic paper face down (the side without decoration will be facing up).

Step 6: Place your cut-out foam board onto the decorative paper. Draw guidelines around your foam board that leave enough room to fold the paper over the back of the foam board.

Step 7: Remove your foam board and cut around the guidelines you have drawn (make sure to do this on your cutting board).

Step 8: With your glue stick, add glue all over the back of the decorative paper you have cut out.

Step 9: Place the foam board onto the glue in the centre of your cut-out – ensuring all exposed sides are equal.

Step 10: Cut out the corners of the exposed decorative paper leaving four flaps on the sides.

Step 11: Fold the corners of paper over the back of the foam board, applying glue to stick.

Step 12: Measure the height of your battery pack and add a few centimeters to allow room.

Step 13: You will now make the sides of your stand to hide the battery pack. Depending on preference, make the sides of the frame as tall as you like.

Step 14: To do this, repeat the process of making the initial covered foam board four times. Make sure all sides of your stand are the same height and width with your ruler and pencil (the measurement of your battery height plus an additional few centimeters is the minimum).

Step 15: Once you have made your stand sides – glue them to the first board you created. Make sure that the decorative paper is facing out. You should now have a stand with five sides. The top (the largest board), left, right, back, and front panels that are all the same size.

Step 16: Place your candle on the bottom of the stand and draw a guideline around the base.

Step 17: With your Stanley knife, pierce a hole in the centre of the new guideline big enough to allow the LED to fit through.

Step 18: Feed the LED light through the hole and store the excess wire and battery pack under the stand. Make sure the length you feed through is the same height as the candle.

Step 19: Use tape to secure the battery pack and wire.

Step 20: Put on your heatproof gloves. Take the wire and heat it over an open flame.

Step 21: Drive the wire through the centre of the bottom of your candle. Be careful of melted wax that will drip away from the candle.

Step 22: Repeat slowly and carefully until there is a clear opening for your LED bulb to fit through.

Step 23: Feed your LED bulb through the new passage you have made in the candle.

Step 24: Secure your candle in place on the stand with glue.

Step 25: Once the glue has dried, your flameless candle is complete!

Now you have a beautiful and safe flameless candle that can be used indoors without worry. This project is great for a romantic evening, adding ambiance to a dinner party, or providing light during a power outage. These flameless candles are also a fantastic way to decorate for a wedding or event. Enjoy your new candle!
